4 Simple Packing Tips to Make Moving Day Go Smoothly

Moving day can be really stressful, with so many boxes to move and things to do, but it will go much more smoothly if you are prepared. By following the four simple packing tips in this article, you can ensure that your moving day will go smoothly and your movers will be able to work as efficiently as possible.
1. Declutter your home before packing
Before you move, it's a good idea to declutter your entire home. Your moving day will go more smoothly if you aren't moving extra stuff you don't want and then spending time unpacking things you’ll never use.
Go through every room of your house and throw away or donate everything you don't want anymore, whether it's old books and DVDs, kitchen gadgets you never use, children's toys and games they've outgrown, or pieces of furniture you don't want to take with you.
You can search online for tips on how to declutter certain items. For example with clothing, you can throw away duplicate pieces or get rid of items that don't fit well. If you're not sure about whether you want something, you can ask your movers about putting it in storage. If you still don't want it after six months, you can get rid of it with a free conscience.
Ask your movers to pick up your storage stuff before moving day to save stress on the day.
2. Start packing non-essential items well in advance
A good rule of thumb with moving is that you should start to pack sooner than you think, as you’ll never have as much time as you think. The Spruce recommends that you should start packing around six weeks in advance, as this will give you ample time to do everything.
Start by packing your least-used items into boxes, sealing them and putting them in an out-of-the-way place, such as a shed or spare bedroom.
Begin with things you know you won't need, such as out-of-season clothes, holiday items, books, and kitchen gadgets you don't often use. If you need packing supplies such as boxes, your movers may be able to provide them, so make sure you ask. Moving day will be much easier if you aren't rushing around, so starting early is essential.
3. Label your boxes accurately
Both you and your movers will have a much easier time on moving day if you both know exactly where each box goes. Clearly label each box with a short list of what is inside so you can quickly find the things you need on the day.
You can choose from a variety of labelling options, such as colour-coding each box based on which room it goes in, as well as indicating whether the box is high or low priority. By labelling your boxes correctly, you will lower the risk of not being able to find something you need. Your movers will be able to work more efficiently, and unpacking will be much easier.
4. Pack a box for your first night
You likely won’t be able to unpack all your bags and boxes on the first night, so you should pack a separate box for your first night. Make sure you clearly mark it as your first-night box, and get your movers to put it in the living room or another central location.
What you want to put in it depends on your family, but you might want to add snacks, food and drinks for your first morning and evening as well as some toys, a book, bedding and blankets, a change of clothes and some toiletries.
If you take the time to adequately declutter your space, start packing well in advance of your move, label your boxes using a good system, and make sure you pack a special box for your first evening, you can make your move go as smoothly as possible.
