Make Packing Less Stressful — Geelong, VIC — Zippy Removals & Storage

The whole process of moving home can be stressful. For some people, the worst part of this process is packing up their belongings before their moving day. To make things go more smoothly at this stage, try the following tips.

1. Get started early

You can easily run into problems when you pack for a house move by leaving things too late. If you only start to think about packing a day or so before the move, then you put yourself under additional pressure.

You'll only really know the scope of the job when you start to pack. So, make as early a start on this process as possible. Planning ahead helps you understand how much work you have to do and how long it will take.

First, walk through your home. Go from room to room, and look at what you need to pack. Remember to look at places people often forget about and leave to the last minute like garages, sheds and attic storage spaces. Take a notebook with you so you can start to make lists of jobs you need to do.

2. Buy specialist packing supplies

Once you have an idea of how much stuff you need to pack, you can buy packing supplies. This isn't just a question of buying enough sturdy boxes and tape. You can also buy specialist products that make packing easier.

For example, portable wardrobe cartons make it easy to pack all your clothes. These boxes contain a hanging rail so you can transfer clothes directly from your wardrobe to the box. Specialist slimline boxes make it easy to securely pack fragile items like TVs, mirrors and framed pictures.

3. Pack in advance

Don't think that you need to leave packing to the days close to your moving date. You can pack up a lot of your belongings in advance.

Try to pack up things you don't need right now to save time later. For example, if you're moving in the summer, then you won't be wearing your winter clothes at the moment. These can all be packed away. The more you pack early, the less you have to pack later.

4. Spread the load

Packing up for a move is a daunting prospect if you work on your own without any help. You'll find the process less stressful if you can spread some of the load.

If you live with other people, then make sure they do their share. Even your children can get involved. Young kids can pack up some of their toys and clothes; older children can take responsibility for their own rooms and belongings with a bit of supervision. As well as helping you out, taking responsibility for their own packing helps children adapt to a move more effectively.

If you live alone, enlist a couple of family members or friends to help you pack. If this isn't possible, or if you're moving at short notice, then hire a removalist with a pre-packing service. Here, the company helps you pack up some or all of your belongings ready for your move.

5. Get expert help

If you own some fragile, oversized or valuable items, then you may not know how to pack them up safely and securely. For example, you may not have the first idea what you need to do to get a piano ready to move; you may worry about accidentally damaging valuable antique furniture if you don't pack it right.

These jobs are often better left to the experts. Look for removal companies that have experience of packing and moving specialist pieces.
