Protect Your Home From Damage on Moving Day

Moving Day — Geelong, VIC — Zippy Removals & Storage

When moving day arrives, whether you hire movers or not, your home will become a hive of activity. And as you move from room to room, boxes and furniture in hand, the risk of property damage is never far away. So it's important to do everything you can to protect your property on moving day.

But your old and new homes need protection too because your floors, doorways, walls and stairs are at risk. Fortunately, you can protect these areas of your home in the following ways.

Floors

Whether your floors are hardwood or carpeted, shoes, boxes and furniture can damage them in a number of ways. So you need to lay down some form of protection before you begin to move your things.

Cardboard

Cardboard is a cheap and straightforward way to protect flooring. And you can measure and cut your boxes to fit your floors in the weeks before you move.

Blankets

Blankets are a great option if you already plan to throw away some bedding before your move. And blankets don't require as much preparation as cardboard boxes do.

Rugs

If you only plan to protect some of the flooring in your home, then some old rugs can do the trick. A local secondhand shop might be a good place to find old rugs if you don't have any on hand.

However you protect your floors, remember to secure the material at the edges. Make sure the floor covering doesn't move around or crease up as this can be dangerous, especially if you or your movers are carrying heavy items or furniture.

Doorways and walls

Doorways can suffer damage too. Movers sometimes struggle to get large or awkward items through doorways, so make sure you cover your doorframes.

Towels

Towels are great for covering doorframes because they are light. This makes them easy to secure with tape. Unless you have an abundance of towels, cardboard is a better option for protecting your walls.

Cardboard

One of the things people usually do weeks before they move is to collect boxes. If you have an abundance of cardboard boxes, use the frail or thin boxes as doorframe protectors. Cardboard is also ideal for protecting hallway walls because cardboard is light and works great as padding.

Stairways

If you live in a two or three-story home, then your stairs will likely see lots of foot traffic. As a result, you need to protect your balustrades and stairs from damage.

Blankets and cardboard

For balustrades, blankets work best due to their size. Drape one or two blankets over your balustrades and secure them with string or tape to protect them on moving day. You can also form two layers of protection if your balustrades are decorative or fragile. First, place cardboard over and around your balustrades, and then drape blankets over them to protect them from collisions.

Blankets

For your stairs, blankets are ideal because of their size. The fewer separate items you place on your stairs the better, as too many items can become a tripping hazard. Place one or two large blankets over your stairs and secure them firmly with tape.

If you hire a reputable and experienced mover, they might already have their own materials to protect your home on moving day. Professional movers use protective film, rug runners and moving blankets to protect property and possessions.
