The Colour Coding System That Makes Moving a Breeze

For many families, the most difficult part of moving to a new house is packing and unpacking. Getting all your belongings in and out of boxes is incredibly tedious and can be difficult to organise. Homeowners may find that they've packed things into the wrong boxes, or to arrive at their new home only to find the boxes are in the wrong rooms.
Thankfully, colour coding makes packing far more efficient and eliminates those irritating mistakes. By assigning different colours to each room of your house and marking those colours on your belongings, you can avoid the confusion of which items go in which boxes, and ensure your moving team gets those boxes where you want them.
Like the sound of it? Here's how you can use it on your next move.
How the System Works
The best thing about the colour coding system is that it's incredibly simple. All it needs is three easy steps.
Step 1
First, you need to list all the rooms in your house (including kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms) and assign each one a different colour. Ideally, you should choose a range of colours that contrast each other well so you can differentiate them with a quick glance. However, if you have a big house with a lot of rooms, don't be afraid to use different tones of the same colour as long as they're distinct.
Step 2
Once you've decided your colours, you need to mark each packing box with the colour corresponding to the room it came from. So, if you choose the colour red for your kitchen, all the boxes containing your plates, cutlery, pans, and small appliances should be marked in red too.
Step 3
Finally, the last step is to mark the doors of each room in your new house with those same corresponding colours. If your kitchen boxes are all marked in red, for example, your kitchen door or archway should have a red label too.
With your doors marked clearly, all your moving team need to do is match up box colours with door colours. Since no one needs to read the boxes, they are less likely to mess up.
What You Need
Not only is the colour coding system easy to implement, it's also cheap to implement. You only need three things to get started.
1. Moving Boxes
As with any packing method, you'll need to start with a good range of study boxes in different sizes. We can supply you with a range of packing boxes and materials to ensure everything arrives safely at your destination.
2. A Way to Mark Your Boxes
How you mark your boxes with their designated colours is up to you. One option is to use coloured markers, though this works best on white boxes as a brown background can make colours hard to differentiate. Another option is to make your own labels, either from coloured paper or by printing coloured labels from your computer. You can also use coloured tape to seal your boxes.
3. A Way to Mark Your Doors
While many of the options above will work for marking your doors as well as your boxes, note that you need a label that will peel off easily. Heavy duty tape is a bad idea as it can damage the paintwork on your door when removed
All in all, colour coding is one of the easiest and most efficient ways of packing. With boxes instantly identifiable by colour, you won’t accidentally pack items into the wrong boxes. Plus, your moving team won't accidentally put a box in the wrong bedroom or misread a label when everything is clearly marked with its own hue
