If you've decided that your parent can't live alone any longer and should move in with you, then you both have to decide what to do with their furniture and belongings. This isn't always a quick or easy process.

You might find that things go more smoothly if you rent some self-storage space for a while when they first move in. When is this a good idea?

Your parent has to move quickly

You can move in your parent to your home quickly enough; however, sorting through all their possessions could take longer. They might have amassed a lot of furniture and belongings over the years that you both have to sort through.

However, in some cases, you have to make a quick move in this situation. Your parent's home might sell quickly to people who want to move in fast. If your parent rents their home and is close to the end of their rental agreement, then you might not have much time to play with.

Rather than make snap decisions that you might both regret later, you can simply put most of their stuff into a self-storage unit. You can then move your parent in quickly. You won't have to worry about culling their possessions for now; you both get time to decide what to do with them later.

Your parent needs time to adapt

You might have made the decision to share your home with your parent in a heartbeat. However, this doesn't mean that you'll know exactly how it will work in practical terms.

For example, if your parent comes to live with you because they are ill, then they might spend most of their time in a bedroom initially. When they start to get better, you might convert a room downstairs into a private living space for them. You might build an extension or even a granny flat.

Plus, you'll sometimes find yourself having your own declutter at this stage. If your home isn't big, then you might naturally start to get rid of things to make more room for your parent's stuff. You might have to declutter some rooms to make them easier for your parent to get around without having an accident.

So, after a while, you might find that you have more space for more of your parent's furniture and possessions. If you've stored the things they are really fond of in self-storage space, then you can simply move these pieces into your home.
